The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
